We went to Durango, CO. to ride the narrow gage train from Durango to Silverton and back. The trains are pulled by the old steam engines. The scenery along the route is spectacular and the ride is a lot of fun.
Our engine was number 481, built in 1925. It is a 4-6-4 with a
powered reverse (indicated by the double piston up front.)
Tsukiko and Yoshiko are excited about boarding the train.
At last we are on our way, the engine belching much smoke and steam.
It was a nice time of year. All the Aspen trees were turning color.
The conductor is collecting tickets. I am handing tickets to the ladies sitting behind me.
We had some entertainment on our car. A couple of folk singers sang some old railroad songs for us..
Tsukiko and Yoshiko are enjoying some refreshments
This canyon wall, called the "High Line" is several hundred feet high.
One of the old water towers. We stopped twice each way for water.
Over the bridge the train stopped to blow out the lower cavities of
the boilers. Quite a show.
The ride is all over. Yoshiko wanted one more photo by the
engine.
