SOUTHWEST TRIP
2000
Canyon de Chelly

Canyon de Chelly was one of the highlites of our trip. We hired a Navaho Indian guide to take us into the canyon for 5 hours. We saw many petroglyphs and pictographs (ancient Indian rock art), ancient ruins and fantastic rock formations.

This page shows some of the rock art we saw.

These petroglyphs were made by the ancient Anasazi indians who disappeared 900 years ago.

This is a mix of petroglyphs (Anasazi) and pictographs (Navaho). An explanation of many of the symbols are available on request (send email)

This scene depicts the arrival of the Spanish forces to the area

Here are hand prints, a snake, kokopelli (flute player) and a lizard man.

A long string of birds and animals can be seen on this wall
