Death Valley - 1999 Trip

Afton Canyon

While driving down to Death Valley, Steve discovered Afton Canyon, a BLM area through which flows the Mojave River. After spending a quick overnight there he decided he wanted to go back and see more of it. On this, and the next few pages, are some pictures showing some of the scenes in Afton Canyon.

Afton Canyon
DeepWater.jpg
It was necessary to cross this 30" deep ford to enter Afton Canyon. Judy is testing the bottom and the water's depth before we try it. It is not for the timid.
CathedralandRiver.jpg
One of the striking formations we saw was this cathedral like formation. The Mojave river is in the foreground. For the most part this is an underground river but it occasionally surfaces.

Some of the canyon walls are quite colorful.

Another view of canyon walls with the Mojave river in the foreground.

Here is Steve seen in Afton Canyon.

And here are some equestrians traveling through the canyon.
