COLORADO TRIP - 2001

8/22/01 (Wednesday) - Colorado National Monument to Glenwood Springs

We got up before 7 am and had a leisurely breakfast before heading down the road to Glenwood Springs.  The drive was just 100 miles so we arrived at the next camping place at 11 am.  Again, near the Colorado River.

Steve is sitting in an old wagon at our "Hideout" campground

After lunch we drove down to Aspen and took the bus out to the Maroon Bells.  Just as we arrived it stared raining.  Cold, with a stiff wind.  It blew past fairly quickly and we enjoyed a nice walk to the end of the lake and back.  Unfortunately, the tops of the Maroon Bells were socked in with clouds so we couldn't see them at their full glory.

The Maroon Bells were socked in under the weather but you can see the lower portion of them just above Maroon lake

There were still plenty of wildflowers in bloom even though it was almost September.

Another view of Maroon Lake with the overcast Bells behind.

Looking east we could see a different set of mountain peaks

Afterwards we headed back to camp. Stopping at the Wal-Mart store for a few things and for gas,  ($1.529/gal) One of the things we picked up was a new air compressor for pumping up our tires. tomato salad.
