A Cross Country Odyssey - 2003

Sault Saint Marie, Ontaro, Canada

The St. Mary's River connects Lake Huron and Lake Superior. On both sides of the river are the towns of Sault Ste. Marie. Ine in in Michigan and the other is in Ontario, Canada. The Soo Locks are located here and are used to transfer large ocean going ships between the lower level Lake Huron and the higher level Lake Superior. The difference in elevation is about 40 feet.

We crossed over to the Canadian side where we camped for a night and observed the Soo Locks and the activity there.

I believe this is the house of the lock master

The bridge from the US to Canada crosses over the St. Mary's River and this lock

A tour boat can be seen approaching the lock. Steve is standing by a special swinging lock bridge that has lock gates that can drop down across the lock.
